Subject:Because I must maintain my 4:00 a.m. bedtime...stolen from Kristina.
Time:3:11 am.
IN - T H E - L A S T - M O N T H - H A V E - Y O U

4. Had sex: No. Why does this start at number 4? What are numbers 1, 2 and 3 hiding?
5. Bought something: Of course
6. Gotten sick?: No
7. Been hugged?: Can’t recall
8. Felt stupid?: Probably
9. Talked to an ex: No
10. Missed someone: No
11. Failed a test: Not Applicable
13. Danced: No
14. Gotten your hair cut?: Maybe
15. Lied: I am lying right now.

U N I Q U E

16. Nervous habits?: They aren’t caused by being nervous, but many.
17. Are you double jointed? Only in my ankles. Maybe.
18. Can you roll your tongue? No
19. Can you raise one eyebrow? Sort of.
20. Can you cross your eyes? Sort of.
21. Do you make your bed daily? Sort of.
22. Do you think you are unique? I take pride in my rugged individualism while at the same time loathing the implications of the hyper-individualism which surrounds us constantly.

H A V E Y O U E V E R

23. Said "I Love you": Many times. Mostly to family (especially dogs).
24. Given money to a homeless person: Many times.
25. Said " I hate you " : Probably, though not meaningfully.
26. Waited all night for a phone call?: Not that I can recall.
27. Snuck out?: No. This was not a problem when I was young.
28. Sat and looked at the stars?: Many times. Lying down works better, though.

M A N N E RS

30. Do you ever spit?: Frequently, but only in appropriate contexts.
31. You cook your own food?: Of course. I am a bit of a gastrosexual. I quite enjoy cooking my own food.
32. You do your own chores? On occasion.
33. You like beef jerky?: Not particularly. At least I never get it.
34. Are you happy with your life? Of course, though this is the duality which I have always lived with: I enjoy being where and who I am, while at the same time always wishing that I was someone and somewhere else.
36. You own a dog?: I don’t really like those terms. Is there currently an amazing dog that is a part of my life? Yes.
37. You spend your money wisely?: Not at all.
38. Do you like to swim?: Meh. I’ve always preferred to be on the water than in it...or even more preferably hiking beside the water. But swimming can be all right.
39. When you get bored do you call a friend?: No, though I may bug one on MSN.
40. Why was there no #40 until I added it?: I don’t know. And I am the one who added it.

D O Y O U P R E F E R

41. Flowers or angels?: I am confused by this association, but I like gardens, while I do not care for angels, so I guess flowers are my answer.
42. Gray or black?: All shades and all colours are mere parts of the spectrum of life. So both are fine.
43. Color or black and white photos?: It depends on the emotions and feelings evoked by the theme or subject of the photo. Black and white befits a photo of the Brooklyn Bridge with the Chrysler Building in the background. Colour befits a photo of the sun sinking behind distant mountain peaks. You know what I mean?
44. Lust or love?: Love is the answer. It is all you need. Etc.
45. Sunrise or sunset?: Sunsets. They inspire wondrous colours in the sky, and the most magical time of day for me is watching the sun sink below the horizon while I reflect on a day filled with adventure. But sunrises are also very pretty.
46. M&Ms or Skittles?: Chocolate rules all. I most prefer Smarties, however.
48. Staying up late or waking up early?: I can wake up early, but I cannot go to bed before 2:00 a.m. That I am filling this moronic thing out is an example of this.
49. Being hot or cold?: I enjoy both muchly...and it depends. Outside, I probably prefer the cold, but when I am inside, I prefer to be warm.
50. Winter or Fall?: I love all of the seasons, particularly during transitory times, and am always drawn in by the feelings and memories which each season evokes.
51. Left or right?: In regards to what? Both are just arbitrary directions, being part of the totality of our symmetrical bodies. But since I can never let politics go, then I must declare how my outright association with the left (and the far left, really) and general dislike of most, though not all, right-oriented ideas.
52. Having 10 acquaintances or 2 best friends?: Most would say that it is important to have close friends. And everyone except hermits will most certainly have at least 10 (and likely many more) acquaintances. So two best friends, though I am perfectly content to only have one good friend, even though he lives many thousands of kilometres away.
53. Sunshine or rain?: As with everything nature, I love it all, and it all has its place. It does depend on my activities, yes, but strolling through a summer rain, when the grass is greener than green, can be as nice as driving through a frozen winterland on the sunniest of sunny winter days.

1) Crushin', Interested, or in a Relationship?
No, no and no.

2) How's your mood?
My mood is always one of calm contentment mixed with a desire to be doing something else, being somewhere else.

3) When you meet the right person, do you fall fast?
I will keep you posted if this ever happens.

4) Have you ever had your heart broken?
At the time, yes, but it did wear off fairly quickly.

5) Do you believe that there are certain circumstances where cheating is acceptable?
Generally, no, but I am not really a generalist, so would have to know the particulars.

6) Would you ever take someone back if they cheated on you?
Again, everything always depends on the particulars.

7) Have you talked about marriage with another person?
No.

11) If somebody liked you right now, what do you think a cool way to let you know would be?
A note delivered by a paper airplane thrown from the Moon.

12) Do you enjoy playing hard to get?
I don’t play anything, and this is not a situation which comes up for me.

13) Be honest, do you play the "game" when you are dating?
I don’t even know what “the game” is.

14) Do you believe in love at first sight?
Yes I’m certain that it happens all the time </second>

15) Are you a romantic ?
Most definitely. Used to think of myself as a hopeful romantic. Now I usually just think of myself as a “Capital-R Romantic.” As in the aesthetic ideal of the mid 19th century.

16) Do you believe that you can change someone?
Change is the only constant, and everyone is constantly changing and reinventing themselves.

17) If you could get married anywhere, money not an object?
Mars.

18) How's the weather?
Beautiful, like it always is.

19) Do you think going back to an ex is a smart move?
Again, it always depends on the particulars of the situation.

20) Do you have feelings for someone right now, whether they know or not?
No.

21) Have you ever wished you could've had someone but you messed it up ?
I have frequently wished that I could be with someone (I don’t like this possessive connotation), but I have never even gotten the chance to mess it up.

22.) Have you broken a heart?
No. At least not to the best of my knowledge.

23.) What would you do if you seen your bf/gf in bed with a another girl/boy ?
Again, it all depends on the particulars of the situation.

Best
1. Male Friend: Mike.
2. Female friend: I used to have many female friends (way more than male friends). Odd that I have drifted from most of them, but I do retain some degree of acquantainceship with a few. So probably Carol, in that case.
3. Vacation: Anywhere and everywhere that leads to an adventure and to the exploration of new places never-before-seen by me, or the re-exploration of favoured places.
4. Memory : Memories are not prone to singular experience.

Worst
1. Time of day: Time is an illusion. Though I do enjoy lunchtime, nevertheless. And all other times, too. I am probably most comfortable in the time from midnight to 3:00 a.m. (i.e. the “right now”).
2. Day of the week: Days are an illusion. I also have no preference or disregard for any. I guess this would also be a case of the particulars.
3. Food: Gastronomic delights are not prone to singular experience.
4. Memory: Bad memories are also not prone to singular experience. Besides, many things which may have been bad at the time have since become cherished examples of a life lived and experiences gained.

Last
1. Person you saw: My mother.
2. Talked to on the phone: Um...probably some customer at the store. Or my parents.
3. Run in with an ex: I only have one ex, and we only saw each other once after we broke up. So five-odd years ago.

Today
1. What are you doing right now: This and readying myself for bed so that I may get up in the morning and finish two books, finish my SAA paper, do my SAA powerpoint, and maybe see Mike at some point. So in other words, bed should have taken precedence an hour ago.
2. Wearing? Clothing. Specifically: jeans, a t-shirt, and a sweater. And my old-man slippers.
3. Better than yesterday? Each day is no better nor worse than the last; only different.
4. Did you see the person you like? Since I do not “like” anyone (not in the manner which frames this question), no.
5. What's the weather? Sun, turning to dark, turning to rain, turning to snow. Neat!

Tomorrow
1. Is: The first day of the rest of our lives. And Monday.
2. Got any plans: Working and working and working on everything that I need to get done before I go to Peru/before I go to Atlanta/before I defend.
3. Dislikes about tomorrow: Nothing in particular.

Favorite
1. Number(S): 7, 42, Z, Tree, Onion, 2.46893, N.
2. Song: Songs are not meant to be singular experiences. I do not care if I am over-using that phrase. And I do not care if my use of it is ambiguous and perhaps incorrect. And I do not care if it is really just a way of me avoiding the production of a 10-page essay on each of the categories for which I used it, since I am no good at picking out singular favourites, as I like too much of everything to too great of an extent.

1. Missing someone: No.
2. Mood: I was fine. But I have now entered a destructive rampage by having to answer the same question twice.
3. Wanting: Sadly, I am always wanting for so much, though needing none of it.

Single or Taken: Single
Eye color: Brown
Height: 180cm, or 5’ 11”
Righty or lefty: Right-handed, but oddly ambidextrous at pool.
Can you make a dollar in change right now? A dollar is change.
Musical talents: Sorely lacking.

FAVORITES
Kind of jeans: Blue ones.
Weather: All (have we not covered this thoroughly by now?)
Animal: Dogs and people.
Drink: Lime Diet Coke. And Diet Dr. Pepper. And orange cranberry juice. And water. And beer. And whiskey. And chartreuse.
Month: Febtober.

Plan on reading soonish: 13
Want to read before I die: 38

Jeeze, I have to get reading! So many that I want to read (either soon or eventually), and only 16 read so far! Some of the “plan on reading soonish” ones I really do plan to read very soon, but then there are plenty others which do not appear on this list which I am either currently reading, or have lined up. And then, of course, there are so many other great novels that I have read but which do not appear on this list.

I am a bibliophile, too. I own many books, including several on this list (read and unread), but being a bibliophile doesn’t mean that you need to actually read your books, I have been told...

Subject:An oldie but a goodie...
Time:1:12 am.
Do the following:

* Grab the nearest book.

* Open the book to page 56.

* Find the fifth sentence.

* Post the text of the sentence in your journal along with
these instructions.

* Don't dig for your favorite book, the cool book, or the

intellectual one: pick the CLOSEST.

Page 56 of the nearest book contains a large figure and does not have 5 sentences. So starting from the first whole sentence on that page and counting five sentences up, we get: "In most cases, the type of outcome desired by a flintknapper is a flake with a feather termination in which a fracture propagating roughly parallel to the outside surface of the core gradually comes to meet it."

Lithic Analysis by George H. Odell (2003).

As it turns out, I'm quite glad that I came across that sentence! I basically say the exact same thing at one point, but without citation, so it is great to have something to back it up with! +1 for the bibliography (which is now up to about 160 sources)!

Subject:Because neither work nor bed sound terribly appealing...
Time:11:43 pm.
I never, ever write anything anymore. And never fill out these stupid survey thingies anymore. But I just felt in the mood. There are two of them, but I will append them as one. As usual, I write a shitload for most things and no one will ever read them. At least for the check-box section of the one I didn't write any comments, which is /very/ unusual for me...

Anyway, first the one: )

Subject:Xavier Rudd and Other Fun Stuff
Time:11:11 am.
Hi All:

I have recently been introduced to the awesome, didgeridoo-weilding folksy cool music of Xavier Rudd, who is coming to Canada this winter for a tour. I would quite like to go, but currently lack anyone to go with. He is playing two shows at a place on The Danforth. The Jan 31st one is apparently sold out, but he is playing another one on Feb 1st (I think. His website and Ticketmaster say the 1st, but the venue says the 2nd). I imagine that it may sell out fairly soon, too, so if anyone wants to go see him with me, that would be cool. Tickets are $30. 8:00 show. It appears that Mishka is opening. I have never heard of them, but listening to their stuff now, they are all right. And there is a great souvlaki place just down the street from the theatre, so that may draw someone in...

And for all the Burlington people, I will be back there tomorrow evening, and will probably head back to Peterborough on the third or so (when the school re-opens, and I will re-commence sitting at my desk trying to make some progress on my thesis). So I should be around if anyone wants to do anything. I want to see Juno, and I have not yet seen Across the Universe (and it is at the Encore and the AMC, still), so some moviegoing may be in order. Or whatever. Lots of drinking would be handy, too.

Subject:Ah, the goold ole' iTunes...
Time:6:29 pm.
Note: I am ignoring those with no artist.

Sort by Song Title; What are the first and last songs?
First: 25 or 6 to 4 (Chicago)
Last: Zoot Suit Riot (Cherry Poppin' Daddies)

Sort by Artist; what are the first and last artists?
First: 10,000 Maniacs
Last: Ziggy Marley

Sort by Time; what are the first and last songs?
Shortest: One Last 'Whoo-Hoo!' For The Pullman (Sufjan Stevens) - 0.08
Longest: War of the Worlds (Orson Wells) - 51.03
Longest actual piece of music: a track called "Birdland" which apparently features Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, James Moody, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, George Benson, and comes in at 40.25.
Interestingly, I have sixty-four out of 1936 songs which are ten minutes or longer.

Sort by Album; what are the first and last albums?
First: 1967-1970 (the second set of Beatles greatest hits).
Last: Zabriskie Point (soundtrack to the movie - various).

Top 5 Played Songs:
1. The Painted Desert (10,00 Maniacs) - 54 plays
2. Light of the Moon (Steve Vai) - 53 plays
3. Long May You Run (Neil Young) - 45 plays
3. Will He Be Waiting for Me? (Sarah Harmer) - 45 plays
4. Bridge and Tunnel (The Honorary Title) - 37 plays
4. FCC Song All Fucks (Monty Pythin) - 37 plays
4. After the Goldrush (Neil Young) - 37 plays
4. Whispering a Prayer (Steve Vai) - 37 plays
5. Messages (Xavier Rudd) - 32 plays
Interesting how quickly some of the newcomers (e.g. Xavier Rudd) are quickly climbing up the number of play lists despite being introduced relatively recently, compared to some of the old hacks (The Painted Desert, The Light of the Moon) which I played ever so often while staring at rocks all day in Peru.

Find “sex” - how many songs show up?
Two (One by the Sex Pistols and "We're a Sexy Trio," a song which Mike, Adam and Margaret put together in OAC).

Find “death” - how many songs show up?
Two (and they are really two versions (London and Broadway) of the same song from Les Mis).

Find “love” - how many songs show up?
Sixty-Five (I'm sure that you do not need my interpretation here to see what I am all about...)

Try and put as many letters as you can into the search, with spaces in between each letter, if one letter takes all the selections out, skip it, and continue, until you’ve got as many as possible.

What song is left?
Under Pressure (Queen & David Bowie)

What Letters were used?
a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w (All of the artists of Queen plus David Bowie are listed, which is why it survived so long in a search).

Blue Dog <--Rather stupid.

Subject:And we're back...
Time:12:58 am.
1. What’s your natural hair colour?
Ash blonde when I was a kid, but it just turned itself brown with time.

2. What's your middle name?
Thomas

3. Your current relationship status?
Nada

4. Honestly, does your crush like you back?
If I had a true crush, then I doubt it.

5.What makes you happy?
Diggin'

6. If you could go back in time, and change something what would it be?
Agriculture. It was never a good idea. Look at all the things that it has lead to: war, famine, plague, social inequality, etc. etc., and eventually global warming. Hunting and gathering is a far more sustainable system, and requires far less work, and is much less taxing on our bodies (seeing as how that is what we evolved doing).

7. If you could have one super power what would it be?
The ability to make us all hunter-gatherers.

8. What's the first thing you notice about the opposite sex?
Their level of sophistication.

9. If you could describe life in one word what would it be?
Impossible. (That is the description that is impossible, not the life).

10. Have you ever been kissed in the rain?
Not that I can recall, but it is quite unlikely, as my total number of kisses is quite low, so the probability that any were in the rain is also rather low.

11. What are you thinking about right now?
I am weighing the benefits of sorting through photos from my hike, tidying my room, and going to bed, and deciding which will occupy me for the next hour or so.

12. Name 5 things in your closet.
Melting clocks, a plastic skull, a chair, tylenol & a rug.

13. Do you act different around your crush?
Probably.

14.Would you kiss the last person you kissed again?
I only kiss dogs these days. And I consider dogs people. And thus, yes.

15. Are you a heart breaker, or the heart breakee?
Neither, really.

16. Earrings or necklace?
Neither, really.

17. Do you wish on 11:11?
Only that I could have procrastinated less and gotten more work done before getting to this late point in the evening.

18. Good advice if you ever go camping?
I'm a Scout Leader. I am full of advice for camping. Not that the Scouts ever listen. But my advice ranges from making sure that you go to the bathroom right before going to bed, especially on chilly nights, to ensuring that your tent is not in a little dip in the ground, as it will just fill with water should it rain. And some good advice which I have not yet had the opportunity to follow: get a good sleeping bag for winter camp! Like, a $300 one rated to -40! An old, -7 rated sleeping bag is not much help when it gets to -34 outside!

19. Have you ever written a poem or story about your life?
Probably.

20. Commitment, or casual dating?
Neither, really.

Subject:Ontario Election and Referendum, October 10
Time:11:15 am.

It is high time that First-Past-the-Post voting was dealt a blow in Ontario. Mixed-Member Proportional Representation means more representation by smaller parties, and just a more fair way of electing people, in general. And hey, Germany and New Zealand use it, so it can't be that bad, can it?! This thingy will help you get informed about the pros and cons of each system, and make sure that you vote for your Member of Provincial Parliament on October 10, and at the same time mark the referendum ballot for which voting system you prefer!

Subject:Well, I'm Off
Time:8:07 am.
I am heading to the airport around 3:00 today, and am out of the country for the next three months. Which I must say is a little weird, and still doesn't feel like it is happening. Last year my trip was two months long, about half of that touring, and I was far more excited for it. This year I suppose I did sort of want a break from travel, and sitting around my parents' home all month has been kind of nice, and in some ways I don't really want to go. Would have been better if someone was willing to hire me for a month, but what are ya gonna do? Still, this trip feels less adventuresome for some reason, perhaps because I am going to do my own work for 10 weeks, and then just tour for two. I'm sure that it will still be fun and amazing and all. And the three month thing is a little odd, too, although it is not nearly as long as some people go away on exchanges or to teach English abroad and whatnot. And my sister just came into my room to say goodbye and give me a hug as she has just left for work, and she and her boyfriend will be in Paris when I get back, so I won't even see them then, necessarily.

Anyway, to all the Burlington and Toronto area friends that I didn't manage to see this month (sorry! Time just slipped away!), I will be in Burlington for a week or so when I get back before I head up to Peterborough. Or if you really want to see me, give me a call and we can try and go out for lunch or something. Otherwise, see you in September! I think that I will have fairly regular internet access, and I will have my computer with me, so I will post to Livejournal and Facebook often, and will probably be able to put some pictures and video on.

Maybe I should start packing...

Subject:Summer Research Plans (Repost...Sort Of)
Time:11:06 pm.
I leave on Friday (or viernes, as I shall come to know it), and take a direct Toronto - Lima flight. John (my supervisor) will have some stuff to do in Lima for a few days, so I will likely go exploring the city a bit. Then we fly to Trujillo, where John has other things to do, and I will probably go check out Chan Chan. Then we drive to Huamachuco and I begin quickly losing my mind as I analyze stone tools for weeks on end...

We head back to Trujillo and fly back to Lima on August 20. John heads out, and I go meet up with the tour I will be taking. With the tour I fly Lima to Cusco. We spend a few days in Cusco to explore, then begin the Lares Trek (the classic Inca Trail is booked up, but the Lares Trail is apparently nicer, anyway. And has a top altitude of either 4100 or 4500m (I am getting conflicting reports. Either way, that is high!) Then I get to Machi Picchu! Then head back to Cusco, spend another day or two there, and fly back to Lima, then home. So I will fly back into Toronto on August 30.

Time:10:56 pm.
Notice that I said not <i>really</i> procrastination. It is still some level of procrastination. )
